Starting Your Home Biz on a Shoestring Budget

Copyright © Stone Evans, The Home Biz Guy
http://www.PlugInProfitSite.com/main-23595

Whether seeking a supplemental income or a full-time income, many folks have undertaken the task to discover a viable home based business solution to meet their personal needs.

For most folks who contemplate a home business, a low-cost or no-cost solution is not only nice, but also very necessary. Many also seek to find a home business that will permit them to maintain their regular day job in order to protect their base income.

Taking the cautious approach to a home based business and keeping one`s job during the start-up period is often a very good decision. By maintaining one`s job, one can maintain the health of their personal finances while permitting their home business grow healthy and strong.

Fortunately, most home based businesses can be started with little or no cash, can be maintained on a shoestring budget, and can be operated successfully with only a part-time investment.

One day, the business will be strong enough to support itself and its owner. When that time comes, it will make good sense for the business owner to leave his or her outside job to dedicate more time to growing and maintaining their new thriving home based business. You will know when that time has finally arrived.

The nature of a home based business makes it easy and very realistic for most folks to take the plunge into home business ownership.

Yet, many folks put off starting their own home based business, because they have the misconception that they will have to risk thousands of their own hard-earned dollars at start-up. Then later, if their business fails, they fear they may be forced to take out a second mortgage on their house just to stay out of bankruptcy.

Are you one of these folks? Do you let your fears of failure keep you from reaching for your dreams?

If so, then allow me to introduce you to a few home business ideas that you can start for less than $100 and can be started and operated very profitably as a part-time business.

THE LIFEBLOOD OF ALL SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES

First of all, let me advise you to search out a business model that will deliver steady and repeat business. It is the one thing — above all others — that will assure that your company can survive the test of time.

HOME-BASED MAIL ORDER:

Home-based mail order is a good example of how one can quickly grow a home business income. Mail order is a low cost start-up business that can be launched for around $100 USD.

With proper planning, your home-based mail order business will not require up-front inventory purchases. In the mail order business, it is not uncommon to rely upon drop-shippers for product fulfillment services.

By utilizing drop-shippers, we can sell the products, collect the money and then purchase the products from the wholesale outlet. The wholesale outlet will then put a return address for your company on the product packaging and deliver the product directly to your customer.

Your primary expense in the mail-order business is advertising. Classified advertising tends to be a relatively inexpensive form of advertising with thousands of outlets available to the small business owner.

WHOLESALE BUSINESS:

Buy low — sell high. You can acquire high quality, top-of-the-line merchandise for a fraction of the retail cost.

AUCTIONS:

Auctions can be an excellent source for buying cheap and selling high. Both government auctions and Internet auctions can lead to some excellent profit opportunities. Auctions are an excellent tool for both acquiring and selling merchandise.

MAKE AND SELL YOUR CRAFTS:

Crafts are a hot seller at country fairs, swap meets or anyplace where people gather. Make your own crafts and sell them for a tidy profit!

SELLING INFORMATION:

Selling information by mail is another good example of an inexpensive home based business start-up. One can gain the resale rights to information for usually about $50 USD. Other costs will include printer cartridges, paper and postage. There are plenty of free classifieds sites on the Internet, in which to successfully advertise your information.

WRITE INFORMATIONAL BOOKLETS:

Write and publish your own informational booklets; sell them at a high price! All you need is a little know-how, a printer, paper and stamps. This is a GREAT home business idea! You can also sell the resale rights to others, for extra profits. In this age of the Internet, you may also take advantage of the fact that selling information is one of the most profitable endeavors one can pursue online.

OFFICE SERVICES:

Offer office services for hire in your local paper. You`ll be surprised at the amount of regular office business that can be gleaned from one little classified ad Word processing, typing, accounting, data entry, proofreading, transcription, promotional letters and newsletters. All these tasks can be accomplished right from your own home office.

AVON REPRESENTATIVE:

Yes, Avon`s been around for eternity, hasn`t it? Then it`s not such a bad prospect as a home based business, is it? I once knew a woman who did so much business as an Avon rep. that she had people calling her and knocking at her door wanting to order products at all hours of the day and night! Once you are an established Avon representative, you, too, will turn a good profit.

CONCLUSION:

On your search for the ideal home based business, try not to get caught up in any scams that will run off with your money. There are thousands of scam artists out there just waiting for the next sucker to come along. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Just use your good judgment and invest wisely in proven methods of earning extra income.

Will I Ever Work At Home

© 2009 Leslie Truex

As the owner of several work-at-home related websites, I receive email daily asking about working at home. Most writers of these emails indicate they are hard working, can type, have a computer, and are desperate to work-at-home. Those are all nice things to have, but they are not the characteristics or skills that make someone a success. Yes, everyone who works at home is hard working, can type and has a computer, but these are indicators of success.

Through my own experience and in talking with others, I have determined what I believe are the characteristics that determine who will succeed at working at home and who won’t. Before I go into the different characteristics, let me first state that I’m not saying that the people who fit the “unlikely to work-at-home” scenario are less smart or capable. Instead, they tend to be uninformed about or fearful of what it take to work at home. But, if they are willing to learn and do the work, they too can find success working at home.

People who are LESS likely to work-at-home:

1. Focus only on data-entry, typing jobs, and other questionable sign-up “jobs” in their search for work.

2. Have paid hundreds of dollars or more to off-line and online companies suggesting one can send or place ads, process email, process rebates, do surveys, mail brochures, assemble earrings etc and make a living at home.

3. Spend only left-over time in their search for work or a home business as opposed to committing regular daily effort.

4. Have a fear of doing something different or stepping out the comfort zone, which limits their choices.

I was like that person listed above when I started my journey to work at home. I’m not quite sure from where the idea that working at home and getting-rich on menial work originated. It probably came from scammers who saw money in people’s dreams. What I learned the hard way was that “work” is the key word in “work at home”. I haven’t met anyone who works at home who hasn’t worked very hard either in a telecommuting position or in a home business.

Here are the characteristics I have found in people who are successfully working at home.

People who successfully work from home:

1. Recognize that pay to get hired options are scams and that free work-at-home programs while they may be viable, don’t work by themselves.

2. Are proactive in their search for telecommuting jobs or researching a home business. They don’t expect the ideal situation to show up in their email. Instead, they send resumes regularly and follow-up…even to companies that might not be advertising a job but could use a contract or telecommuting worker. Neither do they expect any home business to be successful with haphazard efforts such as a single email or ad.

3. Spend time regularly, usually everyday in their search for work or a home business. This time is scheduled into their life just like all other activities because they know that life has a way of taking over unless you control your time.

4. Understand that there is no job or home business that doesn’t require work. While there may be good free programs, to earn money requires consistent work to earn a regular income.

5. Have a desire to work at home that is bigger than their fear. They are willing to step out of their comfort zone in effort to succeed at working at home.

As you can see, the only real difference between those who succeed at working at home and those who don’t is knowledge, consistent effort and a compelling desire. I know that is what made the difference for me. I got a telecommuting job by sending letters of inquiries out to potential employers outlining my experience and asking if they needed a part-time worker in my area. When I decided I wanted something more than telecommuting could offer, I researched home businesses and chose the one that best fit my needs and work habits KNOWING that I would have to put myself outside my comfort zone in whatever I chose to do. In other words, I didn’t waste my time on Internet gimmicks. I searched for a proven, reputable, yet achievable program. And then I jumped in and did it even when I was scared or tired or discouraged. My dream was bigger than the obstacles, which incidentally are usually all in the mind. Once I learned how to get out of my own way, it got much easier.

The question now is what are you willing to do? How big is your dream? Is it big enough to really learn the truth about working at home and stop wasting your time looking for the job or program that doesn’t exist? Is it big enough to commit time every day to achieving it even if its just 15 minutes? Is it big enough to step out of your comfort zone to do something different to reach your goal? Is it big enough to commit to for the long haul particularly when your dream seems out of reach? If it is, then you have what it takes to work at home!

Remember, Work-At-Home Success is a FREE resource with information about telecommuting including how and where to search for jobs, and home business including ideas and resources to learn more. Plus the blog has additional jobs and work-at-home articles to help you.

I believe everyone can work at home IF they do their research, choose options that fit within their skill sets or passions, and do the work.

Happy Monday to you! Here are some jobs and words of advice as well...

Good Afternoon,

I hope you had a fabulous and restful weekend with your family. I received my flu shot and went to the grocery store for some very much needed grocery shopping;-). I also wanted to share that I was contacted by a reader, in regards to finding a work at home job, as she was in dire straits about where to turn in landing a work from home position. I wanted to be very clear that with any job, as well as a work from home position it may take a few years, weeks, months and days to finally land your dream job from home. I shared earlier that I am still going to school for medical transcription(since 2007) and have still not completed my online program, but my desire is to work from home and my why is too great to quit now. So for those of you still struggling to land a work from home job or business for that matter, Don’t give up. Keep  your skills sharp and continue learning new skills, so that you have more to offer as well when applying for these work from home positions.

Make sure that you qualify, don’t just apply for jobs willy nilly and wonder why you didn’t get the position in the first place. You still need to go through all of the steps , just like an offline job: Apply for the job(making sure you do indeed qualify and have the skills to do the job), Follow-up(call back or in this case online email the head honcho of the job posting and inquire again about the position, only if they say you can as well), Be Professional-just because you haven’t been working for awhile doesn’t mean you can’t be professional as well. Show employers your potential. What can you bring to the table and show them what you can do. Finally, never pay for a work at home job. Keep in mind that when you apply for offline jobs, you don’t have to pay for them when you apply, then the rest should follow. l

These jobs are provided by Leslie Truex and brought to you by Yours Truly.  Good Luck!

Sincerely,

~Mandu

WAHS Podcast #59 What’s keeping you from working at home?

Good Morning Everyone,
Leslie has done it again. I struggle with finding an ideal work at home environment and job because I have a little one at home, so customer service type work from home positions are just simply out of the question. I don't want to have to pay someone to babysit my youngest, just because he makes too much noise. I am hoping that there are and can be work from home positions that are solely data entry, so that background noise is not an issue. Furthermore, Lelsie talks more in this podcast about what may or may not be holding you from landing that work from home position altogether. Worth listening to.

Have a great Day!

WAHS Podcast #59 What’s keeping you from working at home?

Article Writing: Top 5 Skill Demanded By Businesses (How to Cash In)

Article Writing: Top 5 Skill Demanded By Businesses (How to Cash In)

I just read a recent hiring trend report from Elance.com hiring trends for February and found that article writing is one of the top 5 skills that businesses are outsourcing to freelancers. It’s really no surprise, especially since Elance caters mostly to online businesses. After all, what is the Internet made of? Images and WORDS…and it’s those words that are crucially important.

And believe me, most Internet marketers don’t have either the skill or the time to write - or both – and that means a lucrative opportunity for people like you with some writing skills.

But outside of article writing, there are other in-demand skills for online ghostwriting, such as copywriting, blogs, press releases, email marketing, white papers and more. This means less competition for you and more opportunities to specialize and actually charge MORE for your services.

If you’ve been thinking of breaking into ghostwriting and doing it quickly, I recommend . It will show you:

- How to market your services without spending on advertising
- Where to find clients with deep pockets
- Why and how to put up a professional website
- Which industries are virtual gold mines for ghostwriters
- How much to charge to actually make profit
- How to set yourself apart from your competition
- How to develop your portfolio especially when you haven’t had a single client yet

…and more!

To have a successful ghostwriting business, you need the right tools and strategies that successful entrepreneurs use. This guide gives you the stories of two successful ghostwriters who earn a full-time income writing from home. Not only are they inspirational, but they give some great tips too.

The best part is, because this guide is written for Moms, the price is just right. In fact, you’ll easily earn back the cost of this guide with your first writing assignment. I better just stop writing about it and let you check it out yourself.

What a Hectic Weekend!?

Good Morning,
I am back, it has been a hectic weekend with both kids with colds and one with an ear infection. Thankfully it is not what every parent fears with all of this hype around the Swine Flu, but we are definitely taking all of the precautions and doing the best that we can. I unfortunately am not up to par on the job scene for work from home, but it will be coming to you shortly with my resources.
I also wanted to add that this blog is not only about working from home and finding work at home jobs because other readers may already have a work from home gig and may be interested in starting their own business. I have some background in that as well, so I will be incorporating this more into my blog as well. The jobs will not go away, but it will be a little bit of both. Working from home can also mean having your own business as well.
So good luck, be well and I will be in touch.

Got Writing Skills? Get Paid to Write Every Day as a Ghostwriter

If you have ever dreamed about having a career in freelance writing, you might look into the growing opportunity of ghostwriting. Ghostwriting is the practice of writing works (books, articles, etc.) anonymously for a client. In turn, the client gets full rights to place her name on the writing and publish it as her own.

Side Note: If you've heard of ghostwriting before and you already know it's a career path you want to pursue, I recommend you pick up a copy of Just Add Sweat's "How to Become a Ghostwriter" Guide. It will show you exactly what you need to know to get started.

But if you're new to the idea of becoming a ghostwriter, let's continue:

To get into ghostwriting, there are a few skills you should have or work to acquire:

- Excellent Writing Skills: Certainly to be a ghostwriter, you need to be able to write well. Your writing should flow well, cover topics thoroughly and in many cases, your clients will expect you to capture their unique voice in your writing.

- Research Skills: As a ghostwriter, you'll be responsible for finding and processing all of the information that you will need to be able to do your writing on a specific topic.

- Grammar & Spelling: It might seem obvious, but it's important to note. All of the work that you turn into your clients as a ghostwriter must be free of any grammar and spelling errors.

Many different types of businesses and individuals readily use ghostwriting services. Authors, business executives, celebrities and others may look to ghostwriters to write books for them. Online business owners, blog publishers and other websites hire writers to create articles and other content. Information product sellers look to ghostwriters to publish how-to and other instructional guides. The sky is the limit when you are looking for people who want to hire ghostwriters.

There are many things you can do put yourself ahead in this field (and the How to Become a Ghostwriter Guide covers these and more in depth).

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

- Start building a resume that will get you noticed. Highlight any writing experience and if you don't have any, you can offer to do a few free small projects to build your resume. Approach a non-profit business or someone that you know that might need writing services.

- Determine which topics you are qualified to write about. Although many ghostwriters are well-rounded and can write on many researchable topics, having a specialty can help you get work. For example, you might have special knowledge of health, finance or parenting topics. Use this to your advantage.

- Have relevant samples readily available to showcase your writing skills. Many clients are more concerned with how well you write, rather than the amount of experience you've had.

To get more help, get a copy of
Just Add Sweat's "How to Become a Ghostwriter" Guide. It will help you discover if ghostwriting is indeed the right career for you, how to break into the business, service rates and more. Ghostwriting can be a competitive business, but there is plenty of room for new writers if you're armed with the right approach and that's exactly what the guide will give you. Click here for all the details.

The Truth about Google Money

I get email frequently asking about specific “Google” programs or if it’s possible to make money from Google in general. While it is possible to make money from Google, many of the “Google Money” systems are deceptive. Here are some of the deceptions and truths about making money with Google.

Deception 1: Google is hiring people to place ads.
Truth: Google simply offers tools that allow you to advertise (Adwords) or make money placing ads (Adsense) on your website. It’s not a job.

Deception 2: Top name companies are hiring people to place ads on Google.
Truth: Top companies aren’t hiring people to place ads. Instead these “top” companies have affiliate programs and will pay you if you help them sell their goods and services. Google Adwords is a tool you can use to help sell your affiliate items. However, it’s not the only way. I don’t use Adwords and I still make money with affiliate programs.

Deception 3: All you need to do is “data entry” or “type” ads into Google to make money.
Truth: This is my biggest pet peeve when it comes to offers about Google money. Done incorrectly, using Adwords can cost you a fortune with no return on investment. Adwords is an advertising tool in which you can Google to run your offer (they show up on the right hand side of a search page) and you pay only when people click. Sounds simple but if you don’t understand keywords you can be paying for clicks made by people who don’t meet your target market and that’s wasted money. If you pay 10 cents a click and get 100 clicks a day, you’ll be paying $300 a month in Adword advertising. You need to know keywords, your market and how to write an ad that has buyers clicking otherwise its wasted money.

It is possible to make money using Google’s programs. But you aren’t simply going to sign up and type ads. Like any other work-at-home venture, you need to study and understand how it works and how to market. You need to develop a plan and stick to it.

So how do people make money using these programs? Here’s an example I just started. This month I launched a blog/site called BusyMamaWeightLoss.com. In a keyword search I knew that weight loss was a popular search term. Because it’s important to niche and I know moms struggle to find the time and energy to work on weight loss, I focused on the mom target market. The site offers free information about weight loss and is monetized using Adsense (banner at the top of the first post and within the post itself). I use Clickbank affiliate products in the box under “More Resources” and rotate other affiliate offers under “Great Offers. Right now the site is marketed using SEO (search engine optimization), articles, and social networking. Because it’s new, the traffic and income is low. These things take time to build up. Adword advertising could speed things up, but the best keywords are expensive and since the site is free I’m not sure that is the best use of advertising money. One exception is that in the past I have used Adwords not to sell stuff but to help build my email list.

WorkAtHomeSuccess.com is also supported by affiliate programs and paid ads. I used to run Adsense but recently removed it because so many scams and questionnable programs were being offered, which brings up another point. It is important to choose your affiliate partners carefully. I screen all ads and have personally used the affiliate products I offer so I can be sure they are safe and viable work-at-home tools and resources.
Do people make LOTS of money using Google resources and affiliate programs? Some make obscene amounts of money. Most hardly make any at all. The success of such a venture is up to you and how well you understand and implement what’s required. If you think you can just post a site or blog and make money, then you’ll likely fail. But if you take time to research your keywords, set up a good marketing plan, implement and maintain your site, then you can make good even great money.

If you’re interested in learning the details on how to make money using Google Adsense and affiliate programs, there are a couple of resources I can recommend. I have used all of them so I know they are good.
Super Affiliate Handbook – This is a great resource on all the aspects of finding a topic, picking keywords and getting online. Plus it offers tips on using Adwords if you’d like to take a try at that. I bought this eBook several years ago and saw a big increase in my affiliate commissions once I implemented a few of its ideas.

The Niche Blogger – This program was put together by a mom who paid of over $70,000 in debt using blogs and affiliate programs. Many online entrepreneurs, myself including, have starting using blogging platforms (Wordpress) to run their sites because it’s so easy and search engines love them. Niche Blogger is an online course that takes you step-by-step through the entire process of picking a topic, searching for quality keywords, knowing the competition and more. I also like that it uses videos to show you how to set up a Wordpress blog…for the technically challenged, the videos are great! Plus she sets up in a day-by-day fashion so you can pace yourself and not get overwhelmed. Plus there is a forum to ask questions, get feedback, and read about the success of others.
Super Affiliates This is a huge program that also takes you step-by-step through the process of choosing topics and keywords, and getting online. But there is so much more. Almost too much. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by how much there is… eBooks, videos and more. What I like most about this program is that each month it offers a “Business in a Box” that includes everything you need to get a site online including the squeeze page, keyword rich articles to use in marketing, PPC ads, autoreponder emails and more. It’s basically all the prep work done for you. You just need to implement.

Affiliate programs and Google Adsense are two of my favorite ways to make money online. But as I said before, there is nothing automatic about it. Like any good business you need to know what you’re doing and do the work. But it can be fun (you can have a site on any topic of your choice) and it’s so flexible that you can do it around any schedule.

Leslie has done it again in letting us know what works and what doesn't when advertising your products or service. You have to really schmooze a potential customer, but don't try to hard because potential buyers sense that they are being blabbed to about a product or service.

Enjoy Your day and Good Luck!
